My friend Leta, from Ireland, shares this bit of info with us: "This is a "Coat of Arms" meaning one's family was of heraldic status or in the knighthood. Shields and figurals like this combination would be in the center with the family name above or below with other symbolic things like lions, dragons etc adorning it. These days your coat of arms is mounted on a plaque and hung on the wall but in the older times they were carved into the rock over the front door telling anyone who knocked there who the house belonged to."
