The detail is etched into the back of the glass so that you look into the glass to view the frosted design within the smooth crystal. This stone features a portrait of a beautiful woman in profile. The background is not cut away, but is left in the plate of the highest areas of the design. It is sometimes called hollow relief and is the opposite of a cameo.
